One of the best benefits that you can have when you are homeschooling is taking field trips whenever you want to take field trips. When child attend public schools they usually only take one field trip a year with their class, usually these field trips are random and not related to anything that they are studying about at that time. When you home school you can take a field trip and let your student and child learn as they are studying about something. This makes the lesson more effective and they will grasp the material better.
Things that you as a parent can do to help them learn more on a field trip
Before going on the field trip you will want to prepare with some questions that you can ask them while you are on the trip. You will want to have the questions asked in such a way that they will have to think about their answers While you are on the field trip asking questions about the subjects that you are learning about is a great way to get them thinking and give them a learning experience that they would never of gotten by reading a book. Field trips are much more effective in learning than reading about it. While I would suggest having them read about where they are going to go on their trip before going, and learning about it, living this experience with you can never be taken for granted.
Take photos while on the field trip. Photos are a great way to trigger memories and when the child looks at the photo they will remember some of the things that they learned while on the trop. This is also a great way to have them look back on their childhood with many happy joyous memories about times that they spent with you and the family.
Field trips don’t have to be expensive. You can take a field trip to a local park for science experience, or gym class. No matter where you go you will always be able to make a fun learning environment out of the field trip.
Learning doesn’t always come from books
Many of us went to traditional public schools growing up, and the way that we learned was out of books. Some of us still think that books are the only way that a child learns, this isn’t true. Maybe your child learns better with hands on experiences. This is why they will learn more on field trips than if they read it in a book. They can then take these field trip memories and make a memory book for themselves. When you get back home, let them do arts and crafts and write about their experiences, and add some photos. This is not only helping them learn about the subject of the trip, but will be a keepsake for them in the upcoming years.
Take field trips as often as you can. Find cheap places that you can take them, even the library can be a field trip. If they are learning about legal subjects and how it works, you can take them to the local courts to see it in action – which is much better than just reading about someone else’s experience with that.
