Home school is great for some people, other people wouldn’t be interested at all in homeschooling their children. The great thing about homeschooling is that you have the option as a parent to do it or not. There is no one telling you that you must home school. You always have the option to send your child to private or public school.
Homeschooling your child will take a lot of time over the years. You will have to be organized and able to have the patients to teach your child new skills and material. Your child may (will) test your patience many days, and you will have to find a way to get them to stay focused and on task. You will have to set a schedule to teach your child so that they know during these hours they will be learning, then they can go play or do other activities.
You will be responsible to teach your child and make sure that they learn the material that they need to know if you are homeschooling them. Just because you don’t like a subject doesn’t mean that you won’t have to teach it. If you are following a program that sends you the material to teach them you may come across some of these subjects or material that you just aren’t interested in, but will have to make them fun to learn for your children.
You will have to find ways for them to be with other children, maybe your child wants to be in a sports league, and public schools make this easy, you will have to find these on your own.
The good thing about homeschooling is that you can choose some of the material and the influences that your child will be exposed to. Most of us home school for religious reasons where we can add religious training and teaching into the curriculum. Home schooling gives us that opportunity to do that.
Homeschooling Disadvantages:
If your child is a loner or shy, they may have a hard time making friendships with other children their age. You will still be able to home school, but by all means get them involved in other social interactions as much as possible.
Your child may want to be in public school with their other friends. They may want to interact with the other children more than home schooling will allow them to. This is a decision that you may have to make somewhere down the road.
Homeschooled children are very adaptable and will learn material faster than if they were in public school. The one on one attention that they receive from parents can never be replaced, and the time spent together will be some of the best childhood memories that they will have for the rest of their lives.
