When your child goes to public schools then you know exactly how many hours your child will be taught. This is set by most states and they also have exactly how many days a year they must hold schooling hours for teaching your children.  But when you are home schooling there are no set rules on how many hours that you must teach your children, and no set rules on how many days that you r child must attend school. This is up to you to decide on how many hours a day you will teach your children.  Sometimes this is determined by the home school curriculum that you are using. If its preset and already laid out for you, it’s important to note that when you teach them more, they will learn more

When you are giving one on one attention to your child when teaching them at home, you may not have to have as many hours a day as public school. You can cover more material during the time that you are teaching. You don’t have to have the child wait like public school teachers do while you are helping one student. So you will be able to get through the lessons faster. Your home school curriculum may be flexible enough that you will be able to shorten the hours that you teach them, while still covering the material that you need to cover.

You don’t want to have classes to the point where your child is not looking forward to learning. You will want to take breaks between subjects so that the child will stay productive.

When you make a daily schedule your child will learn that they will be learning during these hours, and will have the mindset that will help them learn during the hours that you set. It will help them learn that these school hours are just for learning.

The actual number of hours will depend on what studies and curriculum you have chosen and which learning style you are using. If the subjects are more complex then you will want to allow more hours so that they have time for practice problems, and more time to explain the subject to them.

Younger children will not have such long hours, you can break up your home school hours into smaller time blocks so that they will have time to take a nap between classes, and lessons and even give them time to go outside and play for awhile before coming back to the table to learn more for the day. You will be shocked that the students may learn quicker than you thought and you will have more free time during the day.

You don’t have to have the same amount of time set aside for each subject. Maybe your child is good at one subject but struggles with another; you will want to allow more time for the harder subjects for your child.

There are no easy answers when you are asked, how many hours should I home school my child. It will really depend on how much time your child needs to learn, and each child will be different. Some days they may cover the home school curriculum quicker and you are done quicker, while other days they may struggle more and it will take you more time.  Never rush a child, and let them learn at their own pace and you will be able to teach them more and they will be more receptive to learning.
